Root canal treatment – When is it recommended?
To understand the need for root canal treatment, one should know the anatomy of natural tooth. Our tooth comprises of enamel, dentin and pulp. The inner most layer of the tooth, the pulp, has blood vessels, nerves and connecting tissues. The pulp is responsible for healthy growth of natural tooth. Once the tooth is fully grown it is capable of surviving without the pulp. The soft tissues surrounding the tooth can nourish it. When the pulp of the tooth is inflamed or infected, the bacteria can spread to the root of the tooth. This can lead to serious dental problems. Root canal treatment is recommended to prevent the spreading of dental infection and protecting natural tooth. Following are some cases when our dentist may recommend root canal treatment.
- When a cavity is deep and has caused infection of pulp
- A tooth that has been restored several times
- A tooth which has undergone trauma
- A tooth with a large crack
Root canal treatment procedure
A dental professional has to thoroughly examine the tooth to find out if a root canal treatment is necessary. Our dentist makes a note of signs and symptoms if there is pain. We may take X-rays to check the status of pulp. On confirmation that a root canal treatment is necessary, dentist performs the treatment with the help of local anesthesia.
The treatment involves removing decayed part of the tooth and making an opening at the top of the tooth. The infected pulp is carefully removed with the help of dental instruments. Dental file is used to clean the canal and anti-bacterial agents help in clearing bacteria. The canal is sealed and dental fillings are used to fill the tooth. The tooth is finally capped using a dental crown. The crown protects the weak tooth.
