Tooth whitening begins with protecting lips and gums using a cream. The whitening gel is applied over teeth. The gel contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The whitening agent can enter porous enamel layer and undergo oxidation to clear stain. A special light is used during the course to accelerate the process. The treatment may be split into two settings each for a duration of about 20 minutes. Teeth can be brightened in a single visit.
